Neck Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

Your neck, or cervical spine, start at the base of your skull and runs to the top of your shoulders. The seven small vertebrae in your neck are responsible for supporting your head, which weighs an average of 12 pounds. The muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your neck are incredibly flexible and help you look in almost every direction. However, this mobility increases your risk of everyday wear-and-tear and injuries.

Neck pain can arise for any number of reasons. Sometimes it’s caused by a strain, sprain or another type of injury. Other times, it’s the result of musculoskeletal problems like osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease. Your daily habits can also play a role. For example, if you have poor posture and slouch at work, you’re more likely to experience neck pain than someone who sits up straight.

What are some common symptoms of neck pain?

Neck pain affects everyone differently. However, common symptoms include:

  • Stiffness
  • Decreased mobility
  • Muscle tightness
  • Headache
  • Facial pain

Depending on the source of your neck pain, you may also experience tingling and numbness in your shoulders and upper arms.

Most neck pain subsides on its own within 24-48 hours, but if your symptoms persist, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Dr. Nunn at Covenant Chiropractic Clinic P.C.

How is neck pain diagnosed?

Dr. Nunn diagnoses neck pain by performing a physical exam, reviewing your medical history, and asking you about your symptoms. Dr. Nunn also evaluates your posture and examines the curvature and alignment of your spine.

Next, Dr. Nunn performs a neurological exam. This involves participating in a series of light exercises that test your reflexes and muscle strength. If these tests don’t provide adequate insights into the source of your pain, Dr. Nunn may also order a series of X-rays or blood tests.

After Dr. Nunn pinpoints the source of your discomfort, she develops a conservative treatment plan to align with your individual needs.

What happens during a chiropractic neck adjustment?

A chiropractic neck adjustment, also known as cervical manipulation, is a noninvasive procedure where Dr. Nunn applies precise pressure to the joints and muscles in your neck. During a neck adjustment, Dr. Nunn works to restore your range of motion, while relieving pain, soreness, and stiffness.

Dr. Nunn typically combines chiropractic adjustments with other conservative treatments including light exercise, traditional and no-needle acupuncture, and physical therapy. In addition, medical evidence shows that neck adjustments can significantly reduce chronic neck pain.
