Headaches Q & A

What are headaches?

A headache is any type of pain or general discomfort that affects your head, face, or upper neck. Medically speaking, there are more than 100 different types of headaches, including cluster headaches, migraines, and tension headaches.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 50% of adults will experience a headache in any given year. Headaches occur for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they’re the result of stress and anxiety, other times they occur due to an underlying health problem such as high blood pressure or a herniated cervical disc.

Are there different types of headaches?

There are dozens of types of headaches, but all headaches fall into one of two categories:

Primary headaches

Primary headaches are caused by problems with the pain-sensitive structures in your head. Inflamed blood vessels, muscles, and nerves are some of the most common causes of primary headaches. Primary headaches can also develop due to chemical changes in your brain.

Secondary headaches

A secondary headache develops due to an injury or condition that stimulates the pain-sensitive structures in your head. For example, if you suffer a concussion while playing sports or you’re rear ended, you may experience a secondary headache or associated symptoms, like whiplash.

How are headaches diagnosed?

Dr. Nunn diagnoses headaches by performing a thorough physical exam, reviewing your medical history, and asking about your symptoms. Based on your description of the pain and timing of the attacks, Dr. Nunn can pinpoint the source of your discomfort.

If Dr. Nunn suspects the nature of your headaches is complex, she may also order further diagnostic testing, including X-rays or a blood panel. Rest assured, Dr. Nunn won’t stop until she has determined what’s causing your headaches.

How do you treat headaches?

Your treatment plan depends on the type of headaches you’re experiencing. Dr. Nunn uses chiropractic to treat all types of headaches, but she specializes in cervicogenic headaches, stress headaches, headaches caused by auto injuries, and migraines.

Following an exam and discussion of your symptoms, Dr. Nunn may recommend:

Erchonia cold laser

Erchonia cold laser therapy, or low-level laser therapy, is a cutting-edge treatment that uses phototherapy to repair tissue, reduce pain and inflammation, and stimulate cell production. A series of in-office cold laser treatments combined with chiropractic adjustments may be enough to ease the frequency of your headaches and improve your overall quality of life.

Lifestyle changes

Your lifestyle directly influences your risk of headaches. For example, if you drink caffeinated beverages like coffee or energy drinks, you’re more likely to experience tension headaches. On the other hand, not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration and in turn, headaches. After a one-on-one consultation, Dr. Nunn may recommend eating healthier foods, exercising more regularly, and cutting back on bad habits like smoking or drinking. She can also provide tips that help you achieve a night of more restful sleep and a less-stressful quality of life, in general.

Acupuncture

If you regularly experience stress-related or tension headaches, you may benefit from traditional or no-needle acupuncture. Dr. Nunn performs both of these alternative treatments in-office. The goal of acupuncture is to restore imbalances of flow and encourage circulation throughout the body. Dr. Nunn also uses acupuncture to treat allergy-related headaches and headaches caused by auto injuries.
